FLYING, FELLOWSHIP & FUN
If you’re the kind of person who identifies with these words
… read on! Do you instinctively look up when you hear an aircraft in the
sky? Do you agree with me that flying is the world’s second greatest
thrill? Then, this letter’s for you!
Fellowship is a core
value of Rotary. But do you know or have you ever heard of the
international Rotary fellowships? There are over 50 fellowships, both
vocational and avocational. They range from bird-watching to yachting,
check them out on the Rotary International website (www.rotary.org???)
The International
Fellowship of Flying Rotarians consists of over 1500 members from over 50
countries worldwide. We sponsor fly-ins and aviation-related events in 6
worldwide regional locations.
Our annual major
event is the post-convention fly-about. Each international convention
location determines the itinerary and the aircrafts used.
Fun? You bet! I
started in ______________ (the Melbourne convention). Since then, I’ve
found flying friends in many countries. I’ve flown now in Australia, New
Zealand, England, Scotland, The Hebrides, France, the Mediterranean, Canada
and North America. I’ve flown in aircraft overseas with pilots in their
planes. I’ve hosted my overseas friends in North America in my plane.
Membership in IFFR has given me new insights on flying, new friends and lots
of fun. If you’re not reading this in our website, check it out at
www.iffr.org.
The 2005 convention
in Chicago is Rotary’s centennial year. Our fly-about could be our most
successful ever. In addition to our core constituency, we hope to encourage
new participants, both previously inactive IFFR members and newcomers to our
fellowship.
The convention dates
are 18-22 June 2005. Our fly-about will consists of a trip east to
Niagara Falls, New York- Portland, Maine- Mystic, Connecticut- Manassas, Virginia,
and return to the Chicago area. The convention and fly-away can be done in
two ways. The holidays of 3 and 4 July gives us some “wiggle” time if the
weather won’t cooperate.
In the coming year we
will define our itinerary, determine costs and begin a serious registration
process … stay tuned for more details!
As for flying being
the second greatest thrill (don’t go there, Herman!). The obvious greatest
thrill is landing! A good landing is any one you can walk away from … a
great landing is one where you can use the plane again tomorrow. I know …
I’ve done both!
I’m looking
forward to seeing all my old friends, and I hope a lot of new ones, on the
2005 IFFR fly-about.
